Prankster

My kids again complained all day that I didn't do anything fun for April Fool's Day (is it "fool's" singular or "fools' "as in you and I together?)  I did play along with their childish verbal pranks (Mom, my name's not _______ ... April Fools'!! or Can I have some soda?  April Fools'!!!).  I thought that was jolly fun.  But really, when it comes to playing pranks, I'm terrible.  I can't keep a straight face when I lie or play a joke on someone.  I'm typically clumsy and botch the delivery.  You name it.  I'm just not good at it.

But I got fed up by the end of the day hearing how unfun I was.  So I planned a nice dinner to be finished with a yellow cake frosting in chocolate.  It was a beautiful 2 layer cake.  The kids were just drooling at it.  Yum, yum.

Not so fast.  I put a tablespoon of salt in the bottom layer of cake.  It frosted up beautifully.  As I cut and slid the pieces on the plates, I put on my poker face and served up to my awaiting and greedy children.  Just when they weren't expecting it.

Mr. M took the first couple of bites and kind of looked at the cake funny.  He wasn't sure what to do.  It looked good, but it tasted terrible.  He looked to his siblings to see if they were having the same reaction.  The whole time I'm watching him out of the corner of my eye and shaking with laughter (stifled by a towel).  Miss A looked like she took a bite okay, so he tried another.  It must have been a bad one because he burst into tears and said the whole cake is ruined.  DH and I burst out laughing and said, "April Fool!"  And he just kept crying, "The cake.  You ruined the entire cake!!" (He did get to eat the top layer, and Miss A still ate the salty bottom layer ... gross!)

I told them next year they better watch out.  Maybe it will be a cake made with refried bean frosting.  Yum, yum!
